Beginner's Surf Lessons

What to Expect in a Beginner Lesson

The session usually runs for about 90 to 100 minutes and is divided into clear, easy-to-follow stages that help you understand and apply the basics of surfing step by step. Here’s how it works:

1. Arrival & Equipment Setup

We begin by selecting the right surfboard for you, usually a soft-top board designed for stability and safety. You’ll also be given a rash guard or wetsuit, and a leash to attach the board to your ankle.

2. Beach Safety & Ocean Awareness

Before entering the water, your instructor will walk you through essential safety knowledge. You’ll learn how to spot rip currents, read the waves, and enter the water safely. We also cover basic surf etiquette — like who has the right of way — to keep you and others safe.

3. Land-Based Practice

On the beach, you’ll learn:

  • How to lie correctly on the board

  • Paddling technique

  • How to pop up into a standing position

  • The right stance and body posture

This part is essential for building muscle memory before you head into the water. You’ll practice the pop-up repeatedly until it feels natural.

4. Warm-Up

Before hitting the waves, we guide you through a quick warm-up. Stretching and mobility exercises prepare your body and reduce the chance of injury.

5. Water Time – Catching Your First Waves

Now the real fun begins. You’ll walk with your instructor into the whitewater zone — a shallow area where waves have already broken and are safe for beginners. With the instructor’s help, you’ll catch waves, practice paddling, and pop up onto your feet.

You’ll fall — and that’s okay! Every fall teaches you something. Most beginners stand up and ride their first wave during their first session.

6. Personal Coaching & Feedback

Your instructor will give you one-on-one feedback after each wave to help you improve. You’ll learn how to balance better, time your pop-up, and shift your weight to ride the wave more smoothly.

7. Cool Down & Review

After the water session, we return to the beach for a light cool-down stretch. Your instructor will review your progress, celebrate your wins, and share advice on how to keep improving in your next lesson.
